Renewal of the physical reverse flow exemption

On 20 September 2016 the Secretary of State of the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) issued BBL Company a further extension of the exemption from the obligation to enable physical bi-directional flow capacity over the BBL-interconnector. This exemption extension runs for a further two years until 29 September 2018.

The exemption was issued pursuant to Article 7 of Regulation (EU) No 994/2010, the EU Gas Security of Supply Regulation. After following the process set out in BEIS Guidance on Bi-directional gas flow over interconnectors, the exemption has been granted on the basis of the Secretary of State’s conclusion that bi-directional flow capacity on the BBL is not required since the UK and the Netherlands, as the affected neighbouring Member State, continue to have secure supplies of gas.

During the period of the exemption BBLC will continue to monitor and assess the commercial opportunities for investing in physical reverse flow capacity.
