The first activities for the BBL, the gas pipeline between Bacton and Balgzand, have begun in October, 2004. Two companies - Land & Marine and Westminster Dredging - are making the landfall of the pipeline in Bacton possible. This will take place by means of the construction of a shaft and two tunnels.
A start was made on the preparations at the beginning of October and the performance of the work commenced two weeks later. Initially, an accumulation of ground near the shaft was excavated. Subsequently, the first shaft-ring was installed. This shaft has an internal diameter of approx. 10.5 metres and a depth of 17 metres in relation to ground level.
The next step in the project is the construction of two tunnels. From the shaft, in the direction of the sea, under the beach at Bacton, concrete pipeline segments, with a length of 2.5 metres and a diameter of approx. 1.5 metres, are installed. The length of each of the tunnels is approx. 70 metres. These activities may not take place during the summer. This is in order not to hinder tourism in and around Bacton.
