Safety and Environment
The pipeline must meet the requirements of the directives operated by the Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management (for the Dutch section) and the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) and the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) in the United Kingdom. Effective coordination with these authorities therefore form an important aspect. The necessary permits have been issued in both countries.
Safety is given top priority in operating the BBL. The work is done in accordance with the safety policy that Gasunie operates as standard. The objectives of that policy for the implementation of the activities are:
- no accidents must occur.
- there must be no adverse effect on the health of the company's own
personnel, the personnel of third-parties or other third-parties.
- continuous improvements must be made by efficiently using energy and raw
and ancillary materials.
- to set out to reduce harmful emissions to the soil, water and air.
Gasunie will meet the requirements of the applicable laws and regulations in that regard, will monitor developments in this area and will act proactively where possible.
During the BBL-project only tried-and-tested techniques and materials are being used. There is a specific maintenance and inspection programme available, personnel are well educated and trained.
